Dollar General Launches New pOpshelf Concept Store in Madison

On Dec. 30, the former Dollar General store at 7950 Hwy 72 W Ste D will take on a new life as pOpshelf, Dollar General’s newest retail store concept that provides a fun, affordable, and stress-free shopping experience.

The new concept’s initial targeted customers are primarily female and located in diverse suburban communities with a total household income ranging from $50,000 to $125,000. Its stores feature a wide range of items including trendy seasonal and home decor, home cleaning supplies, party goods, entertaining needs, small Screen Shot 2021 12 28 at 07.37.31electronics, food and spices, and more with approximately 95% of items priced at $5 or less.

“We are excited to introduce pOpshelf from a position of strength, further highlighting our innovative spirit and building on our proven track record of store format innovation,” said Todd Vasos, Dollar General’s Chief Executive Officer.

pOpshelf debuted its first two locations near Nashville, Tennessee in the Hendersonville and Clarksville communities in late 2020. The Madison location will be its 39th store. Dollar General expects to open about 1,000 pOpshelf locations by the end of 2025.

Each approximately 9,000 square foot store focuses on delivering a combination of continually-refreshed merchandise, seasonal specials, and limited-time items, and its shelves will carry a curated assortment of Dollar General’s private brands, many of which have been rebranded.

“At pOpshelf, customers will find a differentiated retail concept that seeks to bring joy to their shopping experiences, with surprising deals in targeted non-consumable product categories,” said Emily Taylor, Dollar General’s executive vice president and chief merchandising officer.

Taylor stated that pOpshelf’s average basket size and value is higher than at Dollar General’s namesake stores, though she declined to share numbers.

According to Taylor, pOpshelf’s colorful displays and frequent merchandise changes are designed to make visits to stores feel like a “treasure hunt,” whether shoppers are seeking a gift, preparing for a party, or decorating for the holidays.
