Mixed-use development adjacent to “The Joe” planned for development
In the Spring Season of 2023, Joe Davis Stadium will open its doors to unveil its renovation into a single-use baseball facility into a multisport venue ready for football, soccer, lacrosse, field hockey and ultimate Frisbee. The field will be artificial turf to maximize flexibility and accommodate intensive daily use.
“An important aspect of our design process has been the advice received from coaches, band directors and TV broadcast teams from Huntsville City Schools, in addition to implementing the standards required for professional soccer as we pursue that opportunity,” City Administrator John Hamilton shared in a news release from the city. “We need a stadium that is smaller, approximately 6,000 seats, and provides amenities and entertainment value beyond the competition on the field.”
Alongside it will stand a development by the name of Stadium Columns, which will feature a multi-family residence, retail shops, restaurants, and an on-site hotel.
Additionally, the property will include fresh landscaping, a new athletic storage building, new and renovated restrooms, and locker rooms, with many landscaping and decorative exterior changes.
“This is a renovation of the entire stadium. A state-of-the-art scoreboard, audio-visual system, infrastructure for media broadcasts, new field lighting, updated seating and new concession areas are among the changes,” said Ricky Wilkinson, Director of General Services.
Anticipation levels will certainly continue to rise as the community awaits the reopening and revitalizing of a decades old favorite. With elevated food and beverage offerings and year-round multi-use opportunities the development is sure to bring increased use and improved value to the community. Although the seating numbers have been brought down, the venue will be offering a variety of seating options, including field-level group boxes, to allow families the options for what suits them best.
“We are excited to start the second life of this important venue,” Huntsville City Administrator John Hamilton shared.
“The young generations of today will get the chance to build lasting memories of ‘The Joe’ like their parents and grandparents did during the first 40 years of the stadium’s life.”
These renovations and developments will span back into 14-months’ worth of hard work, and a much longer time into memories of the community. The Joe Davis Stadium first opened in 1985 for the Stars but fell into a state of decline since hosting its last MiLB games in 2015 and was placed on the Endangered Ballparks List. Thankfully, The Joe was removed from the list when plans of the renovations became public and relisted as ‘Saved.’ Saved for more games, more families, and more memories.
