Registration Open for the 2023 HudsonAlpha Tech Challenge
The HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology is teaming with Urban Engine to host the sixth HudsonAlpha Tech Challenge (HATCH) March 3-5, presented by LatchBio.
The HudsonAlpha Tech Challenge, or HATCH, is a life sciences hackathon where participants compete to solve real-world issues faced by biotechnology researchers and innovators in genomics, genetics, and bioinformatics.
The event will take place in person on the HudsonAlpha campus in the Paul Propst Center (800 Hudson Way, Huntsville, 35806).
“HATCH is more than just a platform for participants to tackle real-world challenges in genomics. It’s a unique learning opportunity for anyone pursuing or interested in a career in the field,” said Tyler Clark, HATCH Lead.
“The event not only brings together professionals, educators, and students to share knowledge, skills, and ideas, but also provides a hands-on, dynamic educational experience that recognizes and celebrates the work of participants. We are excited to see the impact that HATCH will have on the next generation of genomics professionals and how they will shape the future of the field.”
HudsonAlpha is hosting the event in conjunction with Urban Engine, a Huntsville-based nonprofit that specializes in innovation programs including hackathons and business accelerators. This is the sixth year the two nonprofits have teamed up for the hackathon.
The goal of the HudsonAlpha Tech Challenge is to inspire creativity through collaboration and energize the current and next generation of problem-solvers to conceive and construct innovative solutions to biotech challenges.
“Having been the challenge lead for the past several years, my team and I strive to provide real-world challenges that are directly applicable to the types of work that occur on the HudsonAlpha campus,” said Adam Hott, HATCH Challenge Lead.
“HATCH is one of the best opportunities for career exploration, networking, and technical growth that Huntsville has to provide. These challenges drive opportunities for participants to engage in conversations with leaders across the software development and biotechnology communities in Huntsville.”
Participants will compete for the chance to win more than $5,000 in cash and prizes in two categories, High School and College/Professionals. Challenge participants must be 16 years of age or older.
While not required, it is recommended that they have taken an advanced biology, genetics, or biotech-related course as well as have familiarity with computer-science, software development, or data analysis through academics or professional experience to better grasp the challenging concepts.
HATCH will provide computer science and biology mentorship for participants, so subject-matter mastery is not required. Participants do not have to be a part of a team to register.
