UAH College of Arts Humanities and Social Sciences hosts design industry panel for students

Experts discuss state of marketing industry during the 2024 Design Week Panel

On Thursday, April 18, The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHS) hosted a Career Panel in concert with Design Week Huntsville and the American Advertising Fellowship of North Alabama

Four design industry experts spoke to a crowd of students and public relations and marketing professionals.

The panel first addressed questions about the current state of their profession. Their answers revealed a trend toward strategies focused on the end-user.

“Marketing is constantly changing,” said panelist Megan Nivens Tannett, Founder and CEO of Flourish Consulting Services.

According to Tannett, marketing experts should focus on stories and connections. To reach the intended audience, content should be “tailored and intentional, strategic and purposeful,” said Tannett.

Panelist Phil Woodall, Founder and CEO of The Library Of, noted that one of the biggest changes in video production in recent years is the demand for companies to maintain their brand relevance through social media platforms.

In today’s marketing environment, it’s important to “design in a way that grabs their attention and makes the audience care,” said Woodall.

Megan Willoughby, Art Director at Red Sage Communications, talked about the importance of networking and being aware of the latest industry trends in order to stay relevant.

“Don’t just stay in a silo. A design career isn’t a job, it’s a lifestyle,” said Willoughby.

The panelists also answered student questions about standing out as job seekers and about work-life balance.

Panelists pointed to the need for aspiring professionals to tailor their resume and portfolio to potential employers.

A portfolio should be an experience, explained Lilly Prince, Graphic Designer with Red Sage Communications.

“Treat it like its own design piece,” said Prince.

Prince also recommended that students looking to break into the design field get as much experience as possible.

“Learn everything you can from everyone you come into contact with,” said Prince.

This sentiment was echoed by Tannett.

“Take every internship you can, yes even free ones.”

“Make connections–Huntsville is a big city with a tiny network,” continued Tannett.

Willoughby cautioned students that college will not teach them everything they need to know to be successful in the design field.

Willoughby stressed that students should be prepared to keep learning.

Having multiple skill sets is a must according to Willoughby. However, showing a willingness to learn can sometimes make up for a lack of a certain skill.

Panel co-host Lauren Gowins, a co-founder of Design Week Huntsville, also addressed students who are trying to break into the professional design world.

“Companies are looking for those with a drive to work there. Show you care, be intentional,” said Gowins.

The Career Panel was one of five Passport to Careers events held annually by the UAH CAHS. The events are designed to give students a wealth of information and networking opportunities.

Other Passport to Careers events at UAH CAHS included resume editing, LinkedIn profile editing, and a professional etiquette luncheon.
