Community Foundation of Greater Huntsville a Winner at Huntsville Championship

June 1, 2021/in Charities, Lead, News, Nonprofits, Philanthropy, Sports, Tourism/by Mike Easterling

Paul Barjon sank an eagle putt on the second playoff hole to win the inaugural Huntsville Championship on the PGA’s Korn Ferry Tour at The Ledges.

He celebrated by sinking a Rocket Republic Six-Iron, the official beer of the tournament.

Turns out Barjon wasn’t the only winner that weekend.

The Huntsville Championship pledged to give back to the community and May 20 a check of $25,000 was presented to the Community Foundation of Greater Huntsville. The check will go toward veteran funding, a scholarship fund and more initiatives to benefit the community.

“We had an extremely successful first-year tournament and that does not happen without the leadership in this room, the City of Huntsville and the surrounding community,’’ tournament Director Penn Garvich said. “From our volunteers, corporate sponsors, media, and The Ledges, it takes a fully committed effort to put on this event and we are beyond grateful for all the support to ensure this year was a success.

“This check presented to the Community Foundation of Greater Huntsville is a direct result of the support that we received from our corporate sponsors engaged in this year’s tournament. Through the Community Foundation, we are excited to have established the Military Support Fund and the Fore Cyber Progress Scholarship Fund for which these dollars will go and we look forward to seeing their positive impact this year and in the years to come.”

Marketing firm Knight Eady released a statement saying more than 80 companies were involved with this year’s event. One initiative that the Huntsville Championship is launching between now and the 2022 Huntsville Championship is the Trophy Tour. Companies in Huntsville can host the tournament trophy in their office for a week.

“We are grateful for the support of the Huntsville Championship,’’ said Melissa Thompson, CEO/president of the foundation. “To be the tournament’s community partner is a great privilege. We have loved working with Penn and the Huntsville Championship team on creating the Military Support fund and the Fore Cyber Progress Scholarship fund.

“We would not be here receiving this check for this amount without the corporate sponsorships, so thank you for making this happen. We are looking forward to growing this event and the giveback to the Huntsville community through this event in the future.”
