Women in Music Week to showcase talents of 50+ artists

September 15, 2023/in Arts, Entertainment, Events, Featured, Lead, News, Tourism/by staff reports

HUNTSVILLE, AL – Whether playing live on stage or working behind the scenes on production and marketing, women are essential to the success and growth of Huntsville’s music ecosystem.

Celebrating their contributions is what led to the creation of Women in Music Weekend five years ago. This year, Women in Music Weekend is expanding to Sept. 15-24 and being renamed Women in Music Week.

“A weekend really isn’t enough time to recognize and celebrate Huntsville’s amazing female artists,” said Huntsville Music Officer Matt Mandrella. “We have more than a week’s worth of events that should get people excited about supporting women in music. Even better, it’s happening right in the middle of Huntsville Music Month.”

Scheduled events include shows by more than 50 female artists at venues around Huntsville, including a Downtown Lunch Lounge series on the Courthouse Square. There’s also a Career & Artist Development Workshop (Sept. 18) and a Sept. 24 finale featuring Grammy-nominated duo The Secret Sisters.

An artist who has been instrumental in helping organize Women in Music Week is Executive Producer Alli Johnson. A Huntsville-based artist, she’s been affiliated with the celebration since it was launched by Downtown Huntsville Inc. in 2018.

“Celebrating Women in Music means inspiration, opportunity and representation for the diverse community of women that call Huntsville and surrounding areas home,” she said.

Also excited by this year’s event is Lauren Gowins, a member of the Huntsville Music Board and owner of The Bold Agency, which led the Women in Music Week rebranding effort.

“Women in Music Week is creating a larger platform for the amazing talent that resides in our community, while also inspiring and building growth opportunities for those who seek music as a career,” she said.

A complete lineup of events can be found at WomeninMusicHSV.com and HuntsvilleMusic.com/MusicMonth. Visit the Women in Music Week Facebook and Instagram pages for the latest updates.
