Drake State Community and Technical College recognized a historic $5 million gift from the E. Hart Fund during a campus event at the Leidos Advanced Training Complex on April 27, 2026.

The gift, made through the advisors of the E. Hart Fund, represents the largest donation by an individual donor ever recorded in the history of the Alabama Community College System and the largest gift in Drake State’s 65 year history.

The investment will be used to remodel and improve the automotive building so that future students can learn and grow there.

“Ellenae Fairhurst had a tremendous impact on our community, but her legacy is not behind us. It is ahead of us! This gift will support Drake State students to carry forward her vision for our community for generations to come,” said Dr. Patricia Sims, President of Drake State Community and Technical College. “It is our dream that the next Ellenae Fairhurst is trained right here on our campus.”

Drake State said the gift will support its efforts to expand opportunities for students, particularly in automotive training and entrepreneurship. College officials said the funding reflects Ellenae Fairhurst’s interest in workforce development and will be used to benefit future students.

“It is a such pleasure  to be here today on behalf of the E. Hart fund.” said Trishonda Woods, Advisor to the E. Hart Fund regarding the donation for the establishment of the facility. “To Dr. Sims and your leadership team, thank you for your partnership and for the work you do each day to shape the next generation.”
