City to Host Motosports, Youth Wrestling Events

The Rocket City will play host to unique sporting events this summer, according to the Huntsville-Madison County Convention and Visitors Bureau in partnership with the Huntsville Sports Commission.

MotoSurf America and MotoSkate America’s Cup are bringing two of the newest motosports in the world to the city as part of their North American Tour with three days of competition July 8-10, and Spartan Combat will hold a youth wrestling tournament July 3.

MotoSurf will be at Brahan Spring Park, while a site for MotoSkate has not been determined. Spartan Combat’s Rocket City Rumble will be held at the Von Braun Center’s South Hall.

The motosports events will culminate with a televised segment on CBS Sports Network.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to have an international event come to town that’s new, unique and outside the box,’’ said Joel Lamp, sales manager at CVB. “It also brings with it a 30-minute television show encapsulating the weekend and showcases Huntsville as part of that as well.’’

According to its press release, MotoSurf, which is powered by JetSurf motorized surfboards, brings competitors from around the world to compete on a track that will be created at the Brahan Spring lagoon.

MotoSkate, which is a race of competitors on motorized skateboards, brings those same surfing skills to the land on a half-mile course.

“We are proud to partner with Huntsville to bring the MotoSurf and MotoSkate games this summer,” said Martin Jancalek, director of the MotoSurf Games. “As a growing region in the technology sector, it fits our event well as we continue to stay on the cutting edge of technology with the latest engineering in the surfboards and skateboards. All of our competitors are excited to add Huntsville to the tour schedule and we look forward to a great championship weekend this summer.”

MotoSurfThe Huntsville event is the second of the four-stop tour of North America, which opens at Lake Geneva, Fla., on April 22, and wraps the U.S. portion on Aug. 22 in Sebring, Fla. More than 90 competitors from around the globe will take part in the competition, with different disciplines as well as men’s, women’s and youth categories.

“As a destination that is constantly on the forefront of technology, it is exciting to have a cutting-edge sport like MotoSurf bring their events to Huntsville,” said Judy Ryals, president/CEO of the CVB. “This is a truly unique event that not only reimagines Brahan Spring Park as a race track, but also spreads the word about our destination to television audiences and beyond.”

With the competitors coming in early that week for practice and the international presence it brings, the event is expected to bring a $500,000 economic impact to Huntsville.

“MotoSurf brings a completely new sport to Huntsville and we look forward to seeing it up close this summer for the first time,” said Mark Russell, executive director of the Huntsville Sports Commission. “Having an international tour bring their events to Huntsville continues to show how great a sports destination we have.”

Several options are on the table for the MotoSkate event.

“We’ve talked about, ‘Is there a place downtown where we can do it?’’’ Lamp said. “Is there a place at Research Park where we can do it?’ Another one is, ‘Can we use the quarter midget track? So we’re looking at a couple different places to figure out what’s the best one.’’

The wrestling tournament the weekend of July 4 will feature folkstyle, freestyle, greco and duals for boys, girls, rookie and open divisions from 15-under down to 7-under.

“That’s going to be a really big one,’’ Lamp said.
