Public to Get Glimpse of New Skatepark Design

The design for Huntsville’s new skatepark, which was approved to be built on three acres at John Hunt Park in January, will be unveiled at a public viewing Wednesday at Fractal Brewing Project at 3200 Leeman Ferry Road.

The gathering is sponsored by the City of Huntsville, Community Foundation of Greater Huntsville, The Skatepark Project and Team Pain Skate Parks, the firm overseeing the project that is targeted to open in late 2022.

The John Hunt Skatepark will be located between Kid’s Space and the championship soccer fields off Airport Road.

“Skating enthusiasts from across the city spoke with us at two different public input meetings this year and this is it – this is the park you’ve asked for,” Team Pain President/Owner Tim Payne said in a City of Huntsville press release.

 “There are lots of custom bowls, snake runs, a street plaza, features for beginners and a three-quarter pipe that will truly reflect the hopes and dreams of the Huntsville skating community. It’s just an overall vibe that will capture the imagination of those who visit the park for years to come.”

In addition to runs dedicated to novices and street-style skating, the facility will be Olympic quality and include supporting facilities such as restrooms, pavilions, sunshades, lighting, landscaping and expanded parking. 

Skateboarding has been added to the lineup for the 2024 Olympics in Paris, France.

“Skateboarding continues to grow in popularity and is a sport the community has long wanted to see in John Hunt Park,” Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle said when the project was announced. “We’ve been holding a space in the park for skaters, and thanks to the generosity of a local donor we’re able to start moving forward on a project this year.”

An anonymous city donor is contributing $1 million toward the cost. Working in partnership with the Community Foundation of Greater Huntsville, an account has been established for fundraising to support the total cost of the estimated $4 million project.

The City of Huntsville and Community Foundation team will work directly with The Skateboard Project, legend Tony Hawk’s national skatepark advocacy charity, to ensure the project is completed efficiently and up to contemporary standards.
