Amazon Joins Lineup of Huntsville’s Growing, Diverse Industrial Base

May 21, 2021/in Employment, Lead, News, Workforce Development/by Alan Clemons

Huntsville’s industrial diversity continues with this week’s announcement of Amazon’s plans for a fulfillment center in the Rocket City.

The giant Internet retailer is opening a 1 million square-foot center in the fall in the Limestone County portion of Huntsville. It is expected to create some 500 jobs.

Amazon joins the likes of Facebook, Toyota, Boeing, Lockheed Martin and the only joint venture Mazda-Toyota Manufacturing plant with major operations in Huntsville.

“We are honored to have Amazon locate in Huntsville,” said Mayor Tommy Battle. “They are on the forefront of technology in the home delivery market.

“Huntsville is a good fit to partner with Amazon as we ‘change the way the world does business.’”

The warehouse, near the sprawling Mazda Toyota Manufacturing plant on Huntsville’s west side, will handle large merchandise, according to a statement provided by Ashley Lansdale of Amazon’s public relations office.

“We’re excited to launch operations at our new fulfillment center in Huntsville this fall,” the statement said. “The new fulfillment center will create more than 500 new, full-time jobs with industry-leading pay and comprehensive benefits starting on the first day on the job.

“In this state of the art, one million square-foot fulfillment center, Amazon employees will pick, pack, and ship bulky or larger-sized customer items such as patio furniture, outdoor equipment, or rugs.”

The announcement is another feather in the cap for Limestone County, which has seen its industrial/commercial base grow.

“This is an exciting announcement for Huntsville-annexed Limestone County,” said Limestone County Commission Chairman Collin Daly. “This investment in our county and the 500 jobs that will be created by this project, will greatly impact our county for many years.

“We would like to thank Amazon for believing in us, selecting our county for their new fulfilment center, and we welcome them to the Limestone County family.
