Gordon Food Service Opens For Business

February 2, 2022/in Featured, Food, News/by Dawn Suiter

The Michigan-based grocery and restaurant supply chain Gordon Food Service Store opened its doors to the public in Huntsville this morning.

DSC 00551Located at 4710 University Dr., Gordon Food Service Store offers Huntsville residents a unique alternative to the usual club stores and grocery chains, focusing on fresh meats, produce, and other grocery items in household and restaurant sizes as well as cleaning supplies and packaging.

The store is spacious, organized, and well laid-out, with a few unique touches that set it apart from its competitors and even from its other locations.

Store manager Mike Walsh pointed out some of the unique characteristics of the new Huntsville location: “There’s only a couple of stores that have fresh rotisseries…we have a chicken room where we make fresh rotisseries and we have some hot bar items [in the deli]. We also have our Kernels popcorn room where we cook fresh popcorn every day.”

“Huntsville’s been on our radar for a little while,” said Gordon Food Service representative Richard Hume. “It’s an exciting city with a lot of growth going on, a dynamic, exciting place to be, and we want to be part of the community there. The timing was right for building a store.” Hume added that this store was planned in conjunction with another location in Chattanooga, TN.

When asked what made him decide to come to Huntsville to manage the new store, Walsh said “New and exciting opportunities and my wife doesn’t like the cold,” explaining that they’re from Indiana. “Mostly the new and exciting opportunities.” 20220131 140939

In response to a question about his favorite aspect of working for Gordon Food Service, Walsh responded “The culture. [It’s a] family-owned business, and they make you feel like you’re a part of that family. And the exceptional leadership that’s above me.”

Walsh noted that the store is open to the public. “A lot of people think of us as a Sam’s or a Costco,” he explained. “We have no membership fees and we’re completely open to the public and accept all forms of payment.”

Walsh added “We’re excited to be here. It’s a huge opportunity for us, not just as a company but giving back to the community.”

Gordon Food Service Store is open Monday through Saturday from 7:00am-8:00pm and on Sunday from 9:00am-6:00pm.
