Mayor Tommy Battle appoints Amy Kenum as Geographic Information Services Manager

HUNTSVILLE, AL – Mayor Tommy Battle announced the appointment of 21-year City of Huntsville employee Amy Kenum to the role of Manager of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Kenum, a Lawrence County native, was appointed head of the Geographic Information Services Division during the April 27 Huntsville City Council meeting. She will lead and help grow the GIS office, which is now established as a division of the City’s Planning Department.

Since joining the City as a GIS Analyst, Kenum has helped set the groundwork to build the GIS Division into the successful group it is today.

“Amy Kenum is a remarkable asset at the City of Huntsville, and we are fortunate to have her knowledge and expertise to help guide us through historic growth in our community,” Mayor Battle said.

Kenum was critical in the design and development of a singular address table that streamlined database processes in multiple City departments. She also created update processes using models, scripts, Visual Studio and database management to simplify tasks performed by the GIS Division.

She designed, mapped and created the framework for the Maple Hill Cemetery burial locator, as well as many other web applications. During her career, Kenum also established important relationships with entities such as the Madison County Tax Assessor, E911 and Huntsville Utilities, which have been significant assets in sharing essential data.

Since 2002, Kenum has been promoted to GIS Analyst II, GIS Specialist and GIS Support Manager, a position she’s held the past three years. As manager, she created solutions to use GIS applications to streamline workflows for City departments and continues to lead the division into an innovative future with constantly changing GIS technology.

“I am very honored to be appointed to lead the Geographic Information Services Division and to continue to be part of a very talented group of employees who create innovative solutions by mapping data and developing new GIS applications for the public and all City departments,” Kenum said. “I like to say that we are the happy department, because helping others and providing informative services brings me joy and people that utilize our services are very appreciative.”

Kenum holds a bachelor’s degree in professional geography with a GIS certificate from the University of North Alabama. She is also certified as a Geographic Information Systems Professional (GISP). She will graduate with a Master of Public Administration from Columbia Southern University in December 2023.
