Huntsville Hospital expands clinical space and welcomes new executive to lead regional operations
Huntsville Hospital Health System is undergoing significant growth, both in physical infrastructure and leadership, to meet the demands of North Alabama’s expanding population.
The Alabama Certificate of Need Review Board has unanimously approved a five-story addition to Huntsville Hospital’s Madison Street Tower, adding 154,000 square feet of clinical space. The $150 million project aims to address growing healthcare needs in the Rocket City and surrounding areas.
Key features of the expansion include:
- A Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit, supported by a record-breaking $10 million philanthropic donation.
- A Neuro Intensive Care Unit for neurosurgical and stroke patients.
- Three floors of new acute medical space, housing 120 new private patient rooms.
- Renovations to transition all existing double-occupancy rooms to single-occupancy, eliminating shared rooms entirely.
- A redesigned Emergency Department vehicle entrance to improve access and efficiency.
“This expansion allows us to better serve the advanced healthcare needs of North Alabama and southern Tennessee,” said Jeff Samz, President and CEO of Huntsville Hospital Health System. “The additional capacity will help us decrease Emergency Department wait times and provide every patient with a private room.”
Construction, led by Robins & Morton, is set to begin at the northeast corner of the hospital near Madison Street and St. Clair Avenue and is expected to take two years. Once completed, the hospital will increase its total capacity from 881 to 931 patient beds.
In addition to expanding its facilities, Huntsville Hospital Health System has appointed Sam Dean as Executive Vice President of Regional Hospital Operations. Dean will oversee the system’s hospitals outside Madison County, including Athens-Limestone Hospital, Decatur Morgan Hospital, and Marshall Medical Centers, among others.
“I’m excited to return to North Alabama and work for such an exceptional health system,” Dean said.
Dean, a Decatur native, brings nearly 20 years of healthcare leadership experience. Most recently, he served as Market CEO for Merit Health’s five-hospital network in Jackson, Mississippi. His career highlights include leading efforts to secure funding for a new trauma center at the University of South Alabama and serving on Alabama’s Statewide Health Coordinating Council.
“Sam’s extensive expertise and leadership will be instrumental as we continue to grow and strengthen our regional operations,” said Samz. “We are thrilled to welcome him to the team.”
Dean holds a bachelor’s degree in biomedical science from Auburn University and dual master’s degrees in Health Administration and Business Administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He and his wife, Alicia, are returning to Alabama with their four children.
