The first IKEA in Alabama will open Wednesday, Feb. 25, in Huntsville, marking the Swedish home furnishings retailer’s long-anticipated entry into the state.
The 46,000-square-foot store is located at University Place Shopping Center, 6125 University Place Dr. NW, and represents a smaller-format concept designed to bring the brand into growing markets more quickly.
IKEA Huntsville’s Store Manager, Brad Ellis, said the location is part of the company’s broader national expansion strategy. The opening follows years of local speculation and online discussion about whether the merchant would come to North Alabama.
“There’s been chatter online for years about people in Huntsville wanting an IKEA. The online buzz has been pretty incredible the last few months, and we expect Wednesday to be a really exciting day,” Ellis said.
The Huntsville store will feature about 5,000 items on display, with roughly 2,000 available for immediate takeaway.
“We’ll likely expand some of that furniture offering in the future, but most of the larger furniture is what you would need to order,” Ellis said.
The bigger furniture pieces will primarily be available through the company’s order-and-delivery model.
In addition to its showroom and planning areas, the store will include the retailer’s food items, which Ellis expects to be a major draw.
“The restaurant is one of our most popular spots, and so I think meatballs will be one of our most popular items for sure. BILLY bookcases are a popular item. The KALLAX, which is a living room storage system, is really popular,” Ellis said.

The decision to locate the store in an existing retail space aligns with IKEA’s sustainability and growth strategy.
“Getting into buildings where the building already exists is part of our effort at sustainability because we can get into markets quicker. It doesn’t cost us as much to open up, and we’re using existing resources,” Ellis shared.
Beyond the store itself, Ellis emphasized the company’s focus on local engagement. During the grand opening, IKEA representatives will announce a donation of $10,000 to Crisis Services of North Alabama.
“Being a good community partner is important to us as a company,” he noted.
The Huntsville location showcases the evolving IKEA store format, which combines curated displays, kitchen, bedroom, and living space planning services, and a streamlined inventory tailored to immediate purchases and online ordering.
“I think what we’ve put together is a really, really beautiful example of what IKEA can be,” Ellis said.
The opening gives North Alabama shoppers their first in-state access to the global brand and reflects Huntsville’s continued retail growth as the region attracts new residents and investments.
