Ribbon-cutting unveils revitalized Huntsville city park
James C. Crawford Park in Huntsville has a fresh new look and more functional spaces.
On Tuesday, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to officially unveil the park after 4 months of renovations.
The renovations include a new, regulation-size basketball court and an 80-foot pavilion complete with picnic tables and electrical outlets. Also upgraded were the playground and other hardscapes, which are now fully ADA accessible. New parking spaces add better access to both sides of the park.
James Crawford, the park’s namesake, was present to cut the ribbon. The long-time Huntsville resident is a beloved local sports figure and was the first African American member of the Officials Association of the Alabama High School Athletic Association.
Mayor Tommy Battle spoke at the event, calling the result of the renovations “a testament to what can be done through collaborative work.” This collaboration included members of the Edmonton Heights neighborhood as well as the City Administration and the Parks & Recreation Department.
“More than just a park. It’s a symbol of our commitment to creating a vibrant, inclusive, and thriving community for all,” said Mayor Battle.
District 1 Council Member Devyn Keith also spoke, expressing his appreciation for the City’s investment in the community park and the crucial support of community members.
The park renovation project “Edifies another corner of this great city,” said Keith.
Located in the Edmonton Heights Community at 3915 Melody Road NE, the park provides just over 8 acres of recreational space. In addition to the above amenities, it has a paved walking track and softball field.
