Huntsville City Council modifies CNI grant agreement, approves $120K environmental application

January 29, 2024/in Community Development, Defense, Economy, Environment, Featured, Government, Lead, News/by Laura Boehringer

Late last week, the Huntsville City Council voted to modify the agreement between the City and developers who are assisting Huntsville’s application for a Complete Neighborhood Initiative (CNI) grant and approved an application to a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grant.

Council members approved a resolution authorizing the mayor to execute a modification to the agreement between the City of Huntsville and Urban Design Associates, LTD regarding the Mill Creek CNI Implementation Grant Application.

The modification essentially recognizes that the timeframe for the application submission has changed as the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development extended its deadline to submit applications.

Dennis Madsen will give a brief presentation of the application including the plan, layout, and exterior finishes during the next City Council Meeting on February 8.

Councilmember Devyn Keith of District 1 spoke optimistically of Huntsville’s odds of receiving the CNI grant to improve conditions in Mill Creek

“We’re gonna win an award, but don’t jinx it. I just know we are,” said Councilman Keith.

The City Council also authorized the mayor to apply for an EPA grant Fiscal Year 2024 Air Programs Grant, which could garner up to $120K.

The EPA often allocates funds through various grant programs to support projects and initiatives related to environmental protection, including air quality improvement. These grants can be awarded to state and local governments, tribal nations, non-profit organizations, educational institutions, and other eligible entities.

The grant will provide the necessary funds for the City of Huntsville to address GHG emissions and continue core work, such as state and local air quality monitoring networks, air permitting programs, emission inventories, air quality forecasts, air quality training, visibility improvements, and air toxic monitoring efforts.
