Construction begins on new West Huntsville Recreation Center

August 26, 2024/in Community Development, Construction, Entertainment, Featured, Government, Lead, News, Sports/by Laura Boehringer

Ground has officially been broken on the future West Huntsville Recreation Center, marking the start of a year-long construction project in the city’s fifth district.

The new facility, set to be located at 150 Martin Road, just west of Zierdt Road, will cover 27,350 square feet and will closely resemble the popular Mark Russell Recreation Center on Taylor Road.

“This is an exciting step forward in our commitment to enhancing the quality of life across all parts of the city,” said Mayor Tommy Battle. “While this area has seen significant residential growth, it has been underserved in terms of recreational facilities. That’s about to change.”

The recreation center will feature a gymnasium with two basketball courts, two volleyball courts, and three indoor pickleball courts. Additionally, the site will include three outdoor pickleball courts and landscaped areas.

Construction is expected to be completed within a year.

“This center will address the growing need for recreational opportunities and help build a vibrant, active community,” said District 5 Council Member John Meredith. “I’m deeply grateful to the City Administration and my fellow Council members for their dedication and support in bringing this project to life.”

Upon completion, this new facility will bring the total number of recreational and community centers in Huntsville to 15, complementing the city’s network of over 65 public parks.

Parks & Recreation Director James Gossett expressed enthusiasm for the project, calling it a significant addition to the city’s recreational offerings.

“More importantly, it’s a testament to Huntsville’s commitment to providing accessible, high-quality facilities for all our residents,” Gossett said. “This center will serve as a dynamic hub for sports, fitness, and community gatherings, helping to create a stronger, more connected community.”
