Drake State announces new program with goal of boosting local workforce development

Drake State Community and Technical College is introducing a new pilot program, the Skills for Success – Flooring Installation Technician course.

This unique program, the first of its kind in the region, is being offered free of charge to participants. The course is specifically designed to equip graduates with the skills needed for a successful career in flooring installation.

The program consists of two components: an online curriculum and hands-on labs at Drake State, led by seasoned flooring professionals.

Upon completion, participants will receive a recognized credential and gain connections with local and regional employers, addressing the growing demand for skilled flooring technicians.

“We’re excited to launch this program as part of our ongoing commitment to workforce development,” said Dr. Patricia Sims, President of Drake State. “This initiative not only provides participants with the technical skills required for a successful career but also links them directly with employers who are eager to hire trained technicians.”

Applications for the program are currently open and will close on September 5.

The selection of participants will take place on September 6, with online coursework commencing shortly thereafter.

The hands-on portion of the course will begin on September 19 and will run until October 11, ensuring graduates are ready to enter the industry immediately.

“This program is a crucial step in highlighting the numerous opportunities within the flooring industry,” said Kaye Whitener, Director of Operations at the Floor Covering Education Foundation. “By attracting new talent and supporting their education, we are investing in both their futures and the future of our industry. This program will also facilitate job placement, ensuring participants have the skills and connections necessary for a successful career in flooring installation.”

Following the completion of this pilot course, the Flooring Installation Technician program will be made available statewide through any of the 24 colleges in the Alabama Community College System (ACCS).

Funding from the Alabama State Legislature has enabled the ACCS Innovation Center to offer scholarships and provide Alabamians with the necessary skills for success.

“The flooring installation course is a prime example of how we close the skills gap by bringing together community colleges, businesses, and partners,” said Julie Frizzell, Executive Director of the ACCS Innovation Center. “Skills for Success courses like this one, developed by Alabamians for Alabamians, prepare our workforce for high-demand careers and secure a brighter future for our state.”

Drake State is collaborating with the Alabama Community College System Innovation Center, the Floor Covering Education Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration to offer this program.
