City Council debates use of private funds, upcoming 5% electrical rate increase
During the most meeting, the Huntsville City Council announced an upcoming proposal for a 5% electric rate increase, debated whether to address a grey area between personal and workplace funds, and finalized the 2025 budget.
Upcoming Electric Rate Increase Proposal
Director of External Affairs at Huntsville Utilities, Joe Gehrdes, announced that Huntsville Utilities will approach city council with a proposal for a 5% electric rate increase on October 10.
Gehrdes cited increased material costs and city growth as the cause of the proposed change.
Leadership Alabama and Public Funds
The council debated whether city funds should be used to cover the costs for council members attending leadership programs like Leadership Alabama.
Some members argued these programs offer personal growth, and unrelated directly to city council, and should, therefore not be funded by taxpayer dollars. Others highlighted the benefits of learning from other cities and being invited to them as a result of city affiliation. Ultimately, they moved to table the decision until the next meeting, pending research into precedents.
Fiscal Year 2025 Budget
The council approved the annual budget for fiscal year 2025, which includes a balanced general fund of $328 million.
The budget features a 2% cost of living adjustment for city employees and a 7% increase in healthcare premiums for retirees and employees.
Upcoming Events and Community Engagement
The city plans to hold a Hays Farm update at Grissom High School and a town hall meeting.
