Sigma, America’s most advanced mobile tactical cannon rolls into the Von Braun Center
Shoot and scoot.
That’s the strategy behind the newest self-propelled howitzer in the U.S. arsenal.
And it’s all made in the U.S.A.
Elbit Systems, partnering with Oshkosh Defense, unveiled Sigma in a rare public appearance at this week’s AUSA Global Force Symposium and Exhibition.
“We’re launching the Sigma howitzer with our friends at Oshkosh,” said Mark Stiner, vice president of business development for Elbit Systems at the company’s office in Huntsville. “After six years of collaborating with Oshkosh, this is the perfect choice for the Army’s tactical mobile artillery.
“Sigma is the most advanced howitzer in the world.”
The Sigma features integration-enabled platforms that bring power, autonomy, and mission systems together — advancing operational speed and reducing program risk for soldiers.
“Modernization demands more than new systems. It requires production-ready mobility foundations that integrate quickly and scale responsibly,” said Pat Williams, chief programs officer at Oshkosh Defense. “Our commercial manufacturing strength, and experience as a preferred integrator, allow us to deliver advanced capability quickly while maintaining the performance and reliability soldiers deserve.”
Conventional howitzer crews are “wide open, prone to attack – particularly from drones,” said Stiner, who’s lived in Huntsville for 15 years, including more than 10 years stationed at Redstone Arsenal. “It’s designed with a robotic autoload and keeps the crew safe inside an armored protective cab – safe, survivable and significant lethality.
“It’s the only autoloaded cannon built in America – Cat engine, Allison transmission, barrel forged in Pennsylvania and built in Charleston (S.C.) – this cannon was born in America.”
With advanced maneuverability, Sigma’s 10×10 platform moves with brigade combat teams across complex terrain and can shoot and scoot in less than 60 seconds.
Delivering exclusive 360-degree firing, Sigma is equipped with an automated 155mm turret and is the only self-propelled wheeled cannon that can fire all variations of 155mm munitions in the Army’s arsenal.
In the field, Sigma serves with a 40-round onboard magazine and can shoot eight rounds per minute – all while keeping its three-person crew well protected in the armored cab.
Features of the vehicle include:
- 360-degree firing from the only U.S.-made self‑propelled wheeled howitzer
- Shoot-and-scoot in under 60 seconds with a highly maneuverable 10×10 platform
- Automated 155mm turret firing all U.S. Army‑approved 155mm munitions
- Eight rounds per minute with a 40‑round onboard magazine
- Armored cab protection for its three‑person crew
Oshkosh Defense provides the artillery system’s vehicle base.
“Oshkosh took a known, trusted platform,” Stiner said. “We brought the cannon, turret, fire controls.”
Steve Herrick, Oshkosh’s senior director of business development, said the vehicle is the best of all worlds.
“We maximized what each of us do best,” he said. “There’s a real great synergy between the teams.”
“Sigma was designed to deliver real overmatch, so soldiers can fight, survive, and win in the most contested environments,” said Luke Savoie, president and CEO of Elbit America. “This platform provides the might and modernization our U.S. Army artillery formations demand.
“Sigma is built for warriors, made with American grit, and it’s ready now.”
