Ribbon-cutting launches Space Command’s official presence on Redstone Arsenal

“Sir, you are a go for cut.”

And with a snip of the scissors on a “spectacular” Wednesday, U.S. Space Command launched its official presence on Redstone Arsenal.

Several years and three presidential terms in the making, Space Command finally took ownership of its first dedicated operational facility on Redstone to open a “pivotal new chapter in America’s defense.”

The ribbon-cutting ceremony represented a significant milestone as personnel from the command’s intelligence directorate execute their operational missions from Redstone. The facility will house 80 personnel while work continues toward the future permanent headquarters.

“Today, we cut the ribbon on more than just a building,” said Gen. Stephen Whiting, commander of U.S. Space Command. “This facility represents a critical step forward for U.S. Space Command. This is where we plant our flag for the first operational element of our headquarters – the Joint Intelligence Support Element – here at Redstone Arsenal.”

Last week during the annual Huntsville/Madison County Chamber trip to Washington, Whiting shared a conceptual rendering of the command’s future permanent headquarters at Redstone Arsenal.

Whiting highlighted the strong partnership between the command and the Huntsville area, noting that about 20 Space Command employees are already living and working here with about 200 relocating by the end of the year.

“Our partnerships have been the foundation for our success,” he said. “This is the first launch of a 200-plus command team which will be here by the end of the year.”

Whiting emphasized the importance of the move as a national defense priority and underscored the community’s vital role in supporting service members, civilian personnel and their families.

Noting the time that the community has spent in the company of the leadership of Space Command, Whiting said the relationship has perhaps moved from the “dating phase” to “vacation planning phase.”

And, there are more events like Wednesday slated for Redstone Arsenal, he said, including a “commanders conference” in about six weeks with Space Command senior staff.

“This is the first of several ribbon-cuttings, so we’re going to get pretty good at this,” Whiting said.

Brig. Gen. Nathan Rusin, Director of the command’s Intelligence Directorate, was in attendance and touted the significance of this historic event.

“As we execute the strategic transition of our combatant command headquarters to our new home at Redstone Arsenal here in Huntsville, our primary imperative remains absolute: maintaining uninterrupted space superiority and continuous warfighting readiness,” he said. “Make no mistake, the JISE leading this charge serves as a symbol of our commitment to ensuring mission needs are executed flawlessly throughout this move.”

Space Command, working with allies and partners, plans, executes, and integrates military spacepower into multi-domain global operations in order to deter aggression, defend national interests, and when necessary, defeat threats.

The Redstone Transition Team, led by Ardmore native and Guardsman Maj. Gen. Terry L. Grisham, was established at Redstone Arsenal at the end of 2025 to design and prepare facilities for the command. The team helped ensure the move is conducted as expeditiously as possible without compromising mission-critical operations.

“We’ve had a foothold here at Redstone since the day after the president’s announcement in September, but make no mistake: the arrival of the Intelligence Directorate marks the first wave of our deliberate and permanent relocation from Colorado Springs,” said Grisham. “This isn’t just a move; it’s a clear demonstration of this command’s unwavering commitment to executing the President’s directive with the speed and decisiveness our mission demands.”

The Joint Intelligence Support Element directly supports the command’s operational mission through intelligence analysis.

“We are excited to establish JISE at Redstone Arsenal,” Rusin said. “The JISE will serve as a catalyst for the transition of Space Command headquarters as we begin the relocation of vital intelligence and security missions to the garrison.

“We thank all those involved, across the nation, who enabled Space Command to expedite our move to Alabama and the Tennessee Valley.”
