From Hampton Cove to Huntsville Junior High: What’s Ahead for District 2 Schools

A town hall held Tuesday at Lee High School was informative, but otherwise uneventful.

“My kind of meeting,’’ said David Little, the Huntsville City Council’s District 2 representative.

Little figured he’d be peppered with questions regarding recent hot topics such as City Detect, the proposed AI camera system that would be placed on garbage trucks but is on pause for now; police drones; or possibly the presence of ICE.

“Or whatever,’’ Little said. “But it was just the base things, what I call a basic vanilla town hall.’’

Holly McCarty, the District 2 member on the Huntsville City School Board, co-hosted the meeting. The system’s superintendent, Dr. Clarence Sutton, made an appearance as did administrators and other staff from schools within District 2.

It was no surprise the theme turned to schools:

Hampton Cove

“(Administrators) all made themselves available to answer questions,’’ Little said. “The schools in Hampton Cove are full, they’ve added on, and there’s talk of a new middle school out there. They’re being pretty tight-lipped.

“I think they’re trying to find land. They could take the current Hampton Cove, and it must be all elementary, and maybe divide up a little bit.’’

Chapman

A Lee High School feeder school, Chapman, won’t be torn down but the elementary section will be razed. In its place, plans are to build what would be a magnet middle school to feed into New Century.

New Century Technology is a magnet school that shares a building with Lee.

Huntsville Junior High School

Future plans call for constructing a new Huntsville Junior High School across Adams Street from the current campus, on the site now used for athletic practice fields.

The projects are scheduled to begin in late 2026, with the new Huntsville Junior High School set to open in 2028.
