Everbloom Health Opens Food Testing Facility at HudsonAlpha

July 11, 2022/in Agriculture, Biotechnology, Community Development, Food, Health, News, Science, Technology/by Marie Johnson

The HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, located in Huntsville’s Cummings Research Park, has a new resident – Everbloom Health, Incorporated, manufacturers of food products aimed towards those with medical dietary needs.

Everbloom’s dietary portfolio emphasizes the importance of barley as a foundational grain. People suffering from ailments of the kidneys are typically ordered to restrict the amount of phosphorous that they ingest, and with 35% less phosphorous than oat, barley becomes an attractive alternative to allow these patients to enjoy foods that would otherwise be unsafe for them to consume.

Kidney disease impacts over 1 in 7 adults in the USA, according to the CDC. The company is building a portfolio of kidney-friendly food products under the Burl Barley Granola brand for the growing number of consumers that are looking for kidney-friendly products.

“Whole grain barley has a wonderful nutritional profile as well as a great taste and texture,” said Chris Cummings, PhD., President and CEO of Everbloom Health. “We think it is a good platform for developing new food products that are healthful, with clean labels, and that taste simply amazing.”

The site at HudsonAlpha will be used for product development and testing.

With over 102,000 square feet of office and laboratory space, HudsonAlpha hosts dozens of associate companies on its campus. Developments such as this demonstrate that Huntsville’s significance as a hub of scientific development and commercialization ranges beyond avionics and IT, and into some unexpected – and crunchy – directions.
