North Alabama Will Walk to Defeat ALS® on Saturday, October 15, 2022

October 14, 2022/in Community Development, Events, Featured, Health, Health Care, Medical, News/by staff reports

HUNTSVILLE, AL – The ALS Association will hold their annual North Alabama Walk to Defeat ALS® at The University of Alabama in Huntsville on October 15, 2022 starting at 10 a.m. People living with ALS, family members, friends, caregivers, and others impacted by ALS will join the fight to find a cure at the first in-person North Alabama Walk to Defeat ALS® since 2019. ALS, often called Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive motor neuron disease, which gradually robs people of their ability to walk, talk, swallow, and eventually breathe. ALS has no known cause or cure, but the North Alabama community is rallying together to do whatever it takes to change that.

The ALS community in North Alabama will come together to honor a loved one with the disease, to remember those who have passed, and to raise awareness and critical fundraising support for the fight against ALS.

One of those participating in this year’s event is Bill Stallings. When asked about how The ALS Association has impacted his life, Stallings said, “After 8 months of going back and forth to many doctors, I was finally diagnosed with ALS in August 2021. I was devastated. A week later we were at the ALS clinic in Huntsville. There, my wife and I found the most genuinely caring people. I’m so thankful to have them to help guide us through this journey.”

With only two to five years to live, people living with ALS, like Bill Stallings, have an urgent need, and the community is stepping in to fill it by walking for those who can’t. The Walk to Defeat ALS® is The ALS Association’s signature event in which all funds directly support cutting-edge research, programs, and patient care. Last year’s virtual event raised more than $110,000.

Participants can register at http://donate.al.als.org/northalabama or by phone at 256-937-2552. All registered participants who raise $90 or more receive a commemorative t-shirt. Supporters who register or make donations online are not required to attend the Walk.
