Big Spoon Creamery celebrates grand opening
Following the success of its Birmingham and Homewood locations, Big Spoon Creamery is all set to open its Huntsville location this Saturday.
Located on Holmes and Jefferson Street North, on the ground floor of The Avenue apartment building, this ice cream parlor is a cool oasis of dessert in Downtown Huntsville.
The Huntsville Business Journal was one of several media outlets invited to a special preview event this week, where the shop’s employees were able to rehearse for the grand opening by handing out scoops and samples of ice cream.
Big Spoon Creamery specializes in small-batch ice cream, made from ingredients selected to highlight the agricultural bounty of Alabama. While the current stock is made from ingredients sourced from farms local to their current two locations, co-founder Ryan O’Hara, who owns and operates the company alongside wife Geri-Martha, says that they are actively looking for partners in and around Madison County for more local ingredients.
This Alabama flair can result in some unconventional flavors. While staples such as cookies and cream and peanut butter fudge brownie make their obligatory appearances on the menu, Big Spoon Creamery is the place to find such flavors as goat cheese strawberry basil, or sweet corn blackberry.
For those who are vegan, or perhaps lactose intolerant, Big Spoon Creamery offers both a lemon mint sorbet, and a coconut lime and sea salt vegan ice cream. The vegan ice cream is made with coconut milk and rice milk as its base, and honestly, after having tried it for myself, I believe that ice cream may be straight-up better that way, irrespective of dietary needs.
Whether it’s served by bowls, cones, sandwiches or sundaes, Big Spoon Creamery is a great new spot in Huntsville for some seriously good ice cream. Starting this Saturday, everyone can try it for themselves.
