Singing River Trail enacts swift leadership change amid Kvach arrest

Anna Clem has been named the Interim Executive Director of Singing River Trail (SRT), following the arrest of former Executive Director John Kvach.

Kvach was arrested last Monday and charged with five counts of possession of child pornography and one count of dissemination of child pornography. The arrest followed a raid on his Cove Creek Drive home by the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, which described the action as “the culmination of an ongoing investigation into allegations of child crimes.”

Kvach was booked at the Madison County Jail with a total bond of $100,000 and has since bonded out.

In a statement, the SRT Board of Directors condemned Kvach’s alleged behavior as “unacceptable and reprehensible” and assured that, to their knowledge, no SRT resources were involved in the alleged conduct.

The Board pledged full cooperation with law enforcement and initiated the process of finding a new executive director who aligns with their values.

“The important work of the Singing River Trail will continue,” the non-profit stated after Kvach’s arrest.

Simultaneously, the Alabama Humanities Alliance suspended Kvach from its board of directors upon learning of his arrest. They described the allegations as “deeply disturbing” and announced plans to replace him on the board.

Kvach previously served as an associate professor at the University of Alabama in Huntsville from 2008 to 2018.

Anna Clem, who has served as SRT’s Associate Director since 2022, steps into her new role with a robust operational and administrative background.

“I am grateful to serve as the Interim Executive Director during this transition period,” Clem said. “I am committed to working alongside our board and staff to continue our mission and vision of regional collaboration and creating a sense of belonging and opportunity for people throughout North Alabama.”

SRT Board Chair Jared Mitchem expressed confidence in Clem’s leadership, citing her deep understanding of the organization, existing relationships with partners, and commitment to connecting North Alabama as key strengths.

The Board will begin a formal search for a permanent Executive Director in the coming weeks.
