Spring 2025 Civic Engagement Academy: Now open for applications

January 23, 2025/in Community Development, Education, Featured, Lead, News/by Sarah Zupko

Are you a resident, student, or business owner in Huntsville or the surrounding areas?

Are you at least 19 years of age?

Are you interested in learning more about Huntsville’s municipal government and ways to make a difference in the community?

You might be a great fit for Huntsville’s Civic Engagement Academy’s (CEA) spring 2025 cohort!

Applications are now open for this free, eight-week initiative.

“The Civic Engagement Academy is not just a program; it’s a pathway to creating positive change in our community,” said Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle. “We encourage anyone passionate about community involvement to apply and join us in this transformative experience.”

CEA participants will gain a full understanding of civic engagement through a blend of classroom learning and hands-on experience.

The spring session will begin on March 18 with an orientation, followed by weekly classes every Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m.

Spring 2025 Civic Engagement Academy important dates:

  • March 18: Orientation/How Our City Operates
  • March 25: Our City Growing
  • April 1: Our City Safe, Secure & Responding
  • April 8: Our City at Work at City Hall
  • April 15: Our City Maintaining
  • April 22: Our City Engaging
  • April 29: Our Community Resources
  • May 6: Graduation

Local influencers — whether emerging or established — who are hoping to increase community involvement are also encouraged to apply.

Participants are expected to attend at least seven of the eight classes to graduate from the program.

The curriculum is designed to provide individuals with practical insights into local government operations, public safety, economic development, and community engagement.

The ultimate aim of the program is to prepare citizens to create positive, lasting change in their neighborhoods.

The spring application period closes Feb. 14.

Those interested in applying can visit //HuntsvilleAL.gov/CEA for more information and to submit an application.
