Bank Independent Honors Athens State Recipients of Mauldin Scholarship

Bank Independent recognized two Athens State University students as recipients of the 2025 Edward Fennel Mauldin Endowed Scholarship during a reception hosted by the bank and university representatives.

The scholarship, created for first-generation college students, is named in honor of the late Bank Independent President Edward Fennel Mauldin. Recipients John Jones, a senior majoring in management, and Chandler Rice, a first-time awardee also majoring in management, attended the event to accept the scholarship.

Bank Independent CEO Macke Mauldin congratulated the students on their achievements, sharing how his father, the late Edward Fennel Mauldin, never graduated from college, yet led a successful life and career. Mauldin emphasized that his father’s belief in the transformative power of education remains a guiding principle for the bank’s support of first-generation college students.

“You have the support of the entire Bank Independent team,” Mauldin said. “This scholarship carries a responsibility. Many people have helped you get to where you are today, and I encourage you to embrace that responsibility by paying it forward when you see someone in need.”

“Bank Independent and the Mauldin family share a deep commitment to education and a passion for fostering growth within individuals and communities,” said Athens State President Catherine Wehlberg. “Their support empowers our students to grow, thrive, and reach their full potential, aligning closely with our mission at Athens State University.”

The Edward Fennel Mauldin Endowed Scholarship is designed to support educational opportunities and assist students in pursuing their academic goals.
