Huntsville International Airport (HSV) and regional leaders gathered today to ceremonially launch Phase I of the West Aviation development, marking the start of a project aimed at expanding the airport’s aerospace and economic infrastructure.

“North Alabama is one of the fastest-growing regions in the country, and we need the infrastructure to match that growth.” said Congressman Dale Strong. “This investment will help Huntsville International Airport expand its footprint, strengthen critical aerospace and defense supply chains, and attract high-value jobs to our community. As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I’ll continue working to bring federal resources home to North Alabama and keep our district at the forefront of America’s aviation, aerospace, and defense industry.”

The project received $2 million in federal funding through the Fiscal Year 2026 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act. The funding will support transportation and infrastructure improvements associated with the West Aviation development.

The $2 million allocation will fund the initial land development phase to the west of West Runway 18R/36L. This foundational work positions HSV to recruit top-tier aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) companies, expanding the airport’s capacity to serve defense, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing sectors. Long-term plans for the West Aviation development mirror HSV’s busy cargo complex on the East Runway 18L36R, incorporating dedicated hangar space and a direct-access taxiway ramp.

“This funding not only drives development to our west but aligns with the City of Huntsville’s strategy to deliver essential infrastructure, including the planned relocation of County Line Road that supports our community’s long-term industrial growth.” said Butch Roberts, CEO of Huntsville International Airport. “Securing these funds allows us to build our capacity to attract high-value aircraft maintenance and overhaul operations, and create new, skilled jobs right here in our community. The expansion reinforces North Alabama’s standing as a premier national hub for aerospace and defense logistics, laying the groundwork for future commercial and industrial growth.
