North Alabama local retires from Madison Manor after 45 years

In an era when most employees stay with a company for less than five years, Carolyn Herron stands out as an exceptional example of dedication and service. After an impressive 45-year career at Madison Manor, a Crowne Health Care facility, Herron has retired, leaving behind a storied legacy of compassion and commitment with multiple generations of coworkers.

Herron began her journey with Madison Manor in 1979, a time when a gallon of gas was 86 cents, and the average home cost around $58,000. Starting in the payroll department, Herron didn’t have modern luxuries such as QuickBooks or Microsoft Excel to help. Madison Manor wouldn’t acquire their first work computer until 1990.

She tackled her tasks on paper for years and climbed the ranks to become the facility’s main bookkeeper, handling all of the company’s financial data. Herron’s contributions extended far beyond numbers though and it’s not what coworkers will remember most about her.

Felita Smith, the administrator at Madison Manor, highlighted Herron’s exceptional rapport with the residents.

“She really had a way with residents and their families,” Smith said. “She was so kind and patient with them. She understood, especially with the families, what a hard decision it can be to move a loved one into a skilled nursing facility,” said Smith.

Herron’s office was a popular stop for residents, who would often visit for a chat and some of the candies she kept stocked. Her dedication went further as she frequently acted as a sponsor for residents without families, showcasing her generosity and kindness.

Nancy Williams, another coworker, expressed how deeply Herron will be missed by both residents and their families. “I don’t know if it’s hit them or not,” Williams said, noting the sadness expressed by residents’ families over Herron’s retirement.

At 81 years old, Herron now plans to spend more time with her husband and family. Her departure leaves a significant void at Madison Manor, as echoed by Smith: “I miss her every day.”

To honor Herron’s extraordinary tenure, a retirement celebration was held at the Lanier House for her friends, family, and coworkers. An additional sendoff was organized at Madison Manor, ensuring that her beloved residents could also celebrate the conclusion to her remarkable career.
