UAH team places eighth internationally in 2024 University Rover Challenge
A team from The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), representing both the College of Engineering and the College of Science, achieved an impressive eighth place in the 2024 University Rover Challenge (URC), held in Moab, Utah.
Competing as part of the UAH Space Hardware Club (SHC), the team, known as ASTRA, also secured fifth place among U.S. teams.
The URC, organized by the Mars Society at the Mars Desert Research Station in Hanksville, Utah, is a competition that brings together student teams from around the world to test their Mars rovers in a challenging environment. This year, 102 teams began the competition, with 38 teams from 10 countries advancing to the finals.
Teams compete in several rigorous categories, including science missions, equipment servicing, and autonomous navigation tasks.
The competition requires participants to submit detailed reports and videos for evaluation by URC judges, with only the top teams invited to the finals. This year’s competition was particularly competitive, leading to an expansion of the finalist pool.
Louis McEvoy, UAH SPC AutoSat Program Manager, praised Team ASTRA for their performance, highlighting significant improvements to their rover, including a redesigned robotic arm, bio-sensor, and wheel systems. McEvoy noted that the team is already working on enhancements for next year’s competition, aiming for a podium finish.
The University Rover Challenge showcases the talents of engineering and science students and emphasizes the importance of STEM education in preparing future leaders in space exploration. The Mars Society, which organizes the event, is a leading advocate for the human exploration and settlement of Mars. Founded in 1998 by Dr. Robert Zubrin and others, the organization promotes public understanding and support for Mars exploration.
