Boeing to cut 150+ Huntsville jobs amid national workforce reductions

Boeing has announced that they will lay off over 150 Huntsville employees, beginning on January 17, 2025.

The Huntsville layoffs are part of nationwide Boeing terminations. The aerospace and defense company has announced that it plans to reduce its national workforce by 10% — for a total loss of 17,000 jobs.

“Our business is in a difficult position, and it is hard to overstate the challenges we face together. Beyond navigating our current environment, restoring our company requires tough decisions,” said Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg in an October press release.

The furloughs are expected to reach every level of the organization, including executive leadership.

Boeing has experienced multiple, highly publicized crises in 2024.

On January 5, a plane door plug fell off of a Boeing 737 Max 9 on a flight from Oregon to California. In response, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grounded 171 Boeing aircraft and ceased production of the Boeing 737 MAX.

The summer saw two NASA astronauts, Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, become stranded on the International Space Station when Boeing’s CST-100 spacecraft experienced technical issues. The astronauts’ mission was originally planned to last eight days. Wilmore and Williams are still in space and are now expected to return to Earth in 2025 on a SpaceX Crew Dragon.

The company’s struggles continued throughout the fall, as 33,000 Boeing machinists participated in a strike that spanned more than seven weeks. The strike ended on November 5, when union workers voted to accept a contract offer.

Boeing is headquartered in Arlington County, Virginia and employs over 3,000 people in Huntsville.

The Huntsville Business Journal has reached out to a local Boeing representative for comment. The article will be updated upon receipt of their response.
