Huntsville Defense Contractors Partner with Wreaths Across America to Honor Huntsville Veterans During Holiday Season
Volunteers from Northrop Grumman’s VERITAS group, along with community partners, recently honored the lives of local United States military members at Valhalla Memory Gardens on Winchester Road.
As part of the National Wreaths Across America Day, participants placed approximately 1,000 wreaths on veterans’ graves at the cemetery in North Huntsville on December 13.
VERITAS is a Northrop Grumman employee resource group that supports active duty, Reserve, National Guard, and veteran employees through outreach and networking aligned with company and industry objectives.
Jeremy Knupp, vice president of Northrop Grumman’s global command and control solutions business unit in Huntsville, addressed attendees to set the tone for the event.
“At Northrop Grumman, we are deeply committed to honoring our veterans and their families,” Knupp said.
Knupp continued, “Each wreath we lay today symbolizes not only gratitude but also a promise to forge ahead, inspired by the courage of those who have served.”
Lockheed Martin’s vice president for missile defense programs, Jamin Brown, also spoke at the ceremony. He reflected on the weight of leadership and the commitment required of those who serve.
“For those we honored today, moving forward was not just a slogan, but a way of life. It meant stepping into uncertainty, standing firm in the face of danger, and trusting in one another to carry the mission forward,” Brown said.
Knupp thanked employees for their involvement and acknowledged the broader meaning of their participation.
“Your participation exemplifies the core values of our company: integrity, respect, and an unwavering commitment to making a difference. It’s also an acknowledgement of their sacrifices and the freedoms they have secured for us. I am truly inspired by our employees who have volunteered their time to take part in this meaningful event,” Knupp said.
Knupp emphasized the collective responsibility to carry forward the legacy of those who have served.
“Together, we ensure that their legacy is not just remembered, but that it fuels our resolve to continue advocating for their rights, celebrating their contributions, and embodying the values they fought to protect,” Knupp said.
Knupp also shared that this year’s Wreaths Across America theme is “Keep Moving Forward”. The inspirational phrase was taken from the last words of Captain Joshua Byers of the U.S. Army, who was sadly killed in action in Fallujah, Iraq, on July 23, 2003.
Byers was the Company Commander of Fox Troop in the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Armored Calvary Regiment, (2/3 ACR) when an IED struck his Humvee. As smoke filled the air, he spoke a final command to his driver, “…keep moving forward.”
“This theme resonates profoundly in the spirit of resilience and progress, embodying the very essence of what our veterans have fought for, which is a future filled with possibilities for generations to come,” Knupp said.
Wreaths Across America’s signature event, the laying of wreaths to posthumously honor veterans, began more than 30 years ago. The organization’s mission is to Reach, Honor, and Teach, especially focusing on sharing the value of freedom with the next generation.
This year, the non-profit’s coordinated wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery took place at more than 5,200 locations in all 50 U.S. states, at sea, and worldwide.
