Hands-on Gardening: Be a Huntsville Botanical Garden Youth Volunteer

February 28, 2022/in Agriculture, Education, Environment, Events, Featured, Lead, News, Nonprofits, Recreation, Science, Tourism/by Lori Connors

Summer is almost here, and with it comes the end of the school year. Soon, there will be teens with unlimited spare time on their hands. Many of those teens whose parents would really like for them to find something to do besides watch TV and play computer games.

Do you have a teen (or know of one) who loves the outdoors and gardening? If so, applications are now open for the Summer Youth Volunteer Program at Huntsville Botanical Garden.

The program engages teenagers in hands-on outdoor work at the Garden during the summer and it’s a great opportunity for motivated young volunteers that are interested in spending time outdoors, learning something new, and making a difference in their environment.

In this program, participants gain real-world experience in horticulture, environmental education, and plant conservation, all under the mentorship of STEM professionals. This experience allows participants to explore careers in the green sector, to develop a personal connection to the environment, and to meaningfully contribute to the work of the Garden.

Working directly with members of the Garden staff, youth volunteers will gain firsthand experience in three areas: horticulture, environmental education, and plant conservation.

Some of the duties will include ground and greenhouse maintenance, along with learning about invasive species and how to help with removal. In addition, participants will learn about environmental education and plant conservation.

During presentations about careers in the “green industry,” participants will also have the chance to connect with local area professionals.

Volunteering comes with many intrinsic rewards. For their service, participants will gain valuable volunteer hours, which are important for resumes and college applications. They will also have the opportunity to develop mentorship relationships and professional references, along with firsthand exploration in STEM careers. In addition, they can gain personal, professional, and social growth through a deepened personal connection to nature and their role in the environment.

This opportunity is open to teens ages 13-18. Volunteers are required to serve a minimum of 30 volunteer hours.

To apply to the Youth Volunteer Program, prospective candidates must first complete an application form. Applicants must also complete a 500-word maximum essay explaining why they would like to volunteer at the Garden. Additionally, a letter of reference from an adult, someone other than a parent or a guardian is required. Before acceptance into the program, all participants must also complete a brief interview.

All volunteer work will take place on site at the Garden. Completed applications can be submitted via email to education@hsvbg.org or via mail to the Huntsville Botanical Garden, 4747 Bob Wallace Avenue, Huntsville, AL 35805.
