An inside look in Huntsville City School’s latest virtual academy

Huntsville City Schools (HCS) has announced that it will be opening its newest school, Artemis Virtual Academy, in August 2024.

Artemis Academy will provide a hybrid school option for students and families that desire greater flexibility.

Students will complete much of their work online, while still having the option to come into a school setting for individualized instruction.

“Each student will be assigned a highly qualified teacher. Students will be able to attend open office hours and schedule meeting times with teachers. All students will be provided with an HCS-issued device and take-home internet option for students who qualify for Free or Reduced Lunches,” explained a statement from the school district.

Artemis Academy will serve students in grades K-12. The school will have physical meeting space at Blossomwood Elementary for grades K-6 and Lee High School for grades 7-12.

“Students in Artemis Academy will be able to participate in athletics, band, choir, and extracurriculars at their zoned school,” states an HCS press statement.

Representatives from the school district anticipate that Artemis Academy will serve a wide range of needs for students and their families.

“We think Artemis Academy is a good option for all kinds of different students. They might be high achieving students that want to move more quickly, that want more challenge in their curriculum. They could be students that just have trouble with social settings, like school,” said Emily Elam, Chief Information Officer for Huntsville City Schools. “They might be students who have travel sports teams that they want to participate in, or other activities that are important to them outside of school.”

The response to the new school has been enthusiastic. Over 200 families have already applied for entrance into Artemis Academy.

Interested students must apply to gain entrance in the program. They may also be interviewed by representatives from the school to confirm that Artemis will be an appropriate match for the child’s educational needs.

“The HCS Special Education Department will also be involved in reviewing applications for students for whom they serve to ensure the needs of all students are met,” said an HCS press statement.

Students must be zoned for Huntsville City Schools to attend Artemis Academy. Artemis is a public school and there will be no tuition costs to families whose children attend.

Early registration for Artemis Academy is open through February 29. Interested students can apply here.
