Huntsville residents invited to apply for fall Civic Engagement Academy

The City of Huntsville’s Office of Multicultural Affairs is accepting applications for the fall 2026 Civic Engagement Academy, a free program designed to educate residents about local government and opportunities for civic participation.

Established in 2022 by community leaders Rhonda and Frank Broyles, the Civic Engagement Academy has grown to more than 350 alumni since its launch. The program provides participants with information and resources related to civic engagement and local government.

“The Civic Engagement Academy helps residents move from awareness to action,” said Dr. Randy Barbour, Jr., Multicultural Affairs Director. “Our graduates consistently tell us they finish the program with a clearer understanding of how local government works, greater confidence in participating in civic life and meaningful connections with community leaders. This Academy is about equipping residents with the knowledge, tools and relationships they need to build long-term civic involvement and strengthen our community.”

Participants in previous cohorts have demonstrated significant increases in civic engagement, with 92% reporting they are likely or very likely to stay involved in civic life after completing the program.

The Civic Engagement Academy includes interactive sessions with City departments, hands-on learning experiences and opportunities to connect with civic leaders and fellow residents committed to strengthening Huntsville’s future.

The deadline to apply is Friday, Aug. 21 at 10 p.m.

Residents from all backgrounds and levels of civic experience are encouraged to apply.
