Women leaders to gather in Huntsville to build a house for Habitat for Humanity
Women Build brings together women in the community to lend a helping hand – or in this case, a hammer – to support each other.
Habitat for Humanity of the River Valley, which serves Madison and Limestone County, will be holding a “Women Build” starting April 29th. Women Build brings together women from all walks of life to actively address the problem of children in poverty by building Habitat for Humanity houses.
Safe, decent housing is critical to a child’s health and development, yet children are the single largest age group living in poverty. In the United States alone, more than 12 million children — one out of every six — live in poverty.
“The need is great, but it can be met,” said Women Build House Leader, Emylic Brown. “Women can be part of the solution — one house, one family at a time.”
Habitat for Humanity will coordinate an all-Women Build in Huntsville for a single mom in need of affordable housing.
“Our Women Build event provides the opportunity for women to take a proactive step in serving their communities. Volunteers work under the guidance of construction professionals. If anyone is interested in joining our efforts to support a working single mother in our community, Habitat continues to seek sponsors and donors to help in supporting the construction of this home,” shared Chris Mixer with Habitat for Humanity.
On Saturday, April 22nd, from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., the Women Build Kickoff will be held at the Habitat for Humanity Warehouse. The Warehouse is located at 400 Pratt Avenue NW, Huntsville, AL 35801. This event will introduce sponsors, volunteer teams, provide construction training, and answer frequently asked questions.
The first day of construction will also be hosted in the Habitat for Humanity Warehouse on Saturday, April 29th at 8:00 a.m. The organization traditionally pre-builds walls in the Warehouse, where they can work in a flat dry location.
Once walls are built (about three construction days, according to Habitat for Humanity), they are transported for Wall Raising and continued construction at the House located at 300 Lake Drive NE, Huntsville, AL 35801.
Habitat for Humanity of the River Valley was established in 1987 as an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. Habitat for Humanity of the River Valley has partnered with over 300 families to help them realize their dream of homeownership.
Habitat builds strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable homeownership. For more information, please visit www.habitat.org.
