Sarah Zupko named next Editor of the Huntsville Business Journal

December 2, 2024/in Featured, Lead, News, People/by Noah Logan

The Huntsville Business Journal has announced Sarah Zupko as our new editor, ushering in a new chapter for the publication that continues to highlight the city’s dynamic commercial landscape.

A Huntsville native with deep ties to the community and a passion for writing, Zupko brings a wealth of experience and a unique perspective to the role.

Zupko’s journey to the editor’s desk is deeply rooted in Huntsville.

A graduate of Grissom High School, she pursued her undergraduate degree in history at Brigham Young University. After taking time to raise her children, she returned to her academic pursuits, earning a graduate history degree and teaching at the University of Alabama in Huntsville for over four years.

“I grew up with an appreciation for newspapers,” Zupko shared. “My parents subscribed to The Huntsville Times throughout my youth, and I remember how they’d read and discuss the stories. It’s an honor to now be part of a team that tells Huntsville’s story.”

As editor, Zupko is committed to spotlighting the people and innovations that drive Huntsville’s growth.

“The Journal’s primary purpose is to tell the story of Huntsville’s vibrant and growing business community,” she explained. “We focus on the entrepreneurs, business leaders, and innovators shaping our city’s economic ecosystem.”

Zupko also hopes to expand coverage in key industries like financial services and commercial real estate while incorporating features that showcase life in Huntsville beyond work.

“Part of what makes Huntsville so attractive is the fulfilling life people can enjoy outside their careers. Highlighting that will be an important part of our mission,” she added.

Zupko’s enthusiasm for storytelling is evident in the range of stories she has covered.

From exploring the economics of historic preservation in Huntsville to celebrating North Alabama’s national recognition at events like Billy Reid’s Shindig in Florence, Zupko has a knack for connecting with the community.

One of her recent favorite experiences was interviewing William Hampton, a local historian and founder of the Huntsville Revisited museum.

“Every conversation with William teaches me something new about Huntsville,” she said. “Even after living here most of my life, I’m always learning.”

Zupko’s ties to Huntsville are more than professional. She and her husband, also a Huntsville native, returned to the city to raise their two children, now 16 and 13.

Reflecting on her return, Zupko said, “Between the ages of 18 and 24, I lived in five different towns and cities. But when our son was born, Andy and I decided Huntsville was the best place to raise our family.”

As she steps into her new role, Zupko’s deep connection to Huntsville, combined with her passion for writing and community engagement, positions her to lead the Huntsville Business Journal with vision and purpose.

Under her editorship, the Journal is set to continue its tradition of excellence while exploring new ways to reflect the growth and vitality of Huntsville.

“I feel so fortunate to be able to talk to people who love what they do,” Zupko said. “It’s a privilege to share their stories and contribute to Huntsville’s vibrant narrative.”
