Michelin Recognition Makes Purveyor and Salt Smokehouse Standout Holiday Gift Options

For Huntsville residents still searching for meaningful last-minute Christmas gifts, two of the city’s most celebrated dining destinations are offering a compelling option. Purveyor and Salt Smokehouse were recently named to the inaugural Michelin Guide to the American South, giving gift givers a chance to wrap an experience rather than another item.  

Both restaurants were selected in Michelin’s “Recommended” category, placing them among just 15 Alabama establishments recognized statewide and marking Huntsville’s first appearance in the globally respected guide. The recognition highlights the city’s continued evolution into a destination for quality dining, while also creating a timely opportunity for consumers to support locally owned businesses during the holiday season.  

The Michelin Guide is widely regarded as the gold standard for culinary recognition, often influencing tourism, investment and dining trends in the cities it highlights. While no Alabama restaurants earned Michelin stars this year, inclusion alone signals a level of consistency, quality and hospitality that resonates with both visitors and residents.  

Purveyor, located at 201 Jefferson St. downtown, opened in 2017 and is owned by Church Street Family, led by Stephanie and Matthew Mell. The restaurant has become a cornerstone of downtown Huntsville’s hospitality economy, offering elevated cuisine in an approachable setting.

Chef Juventino Manuel leads the kitchen at Purveyor, drawing on his Mexican heritage and experience in Asian kitchens to shape a globally influenced menu. His work is supported by Corporate Executive Chef Luis Branez, who was named Alabama Chef of the Year in 2024.  

Just minutes away, Salt Smokehouse at 1300 Meridian Street in the Lincoln Mill district represents a newer addition to Huntsville’s food economy. Opened in 2024, the family-owned restaurant blends traditional barbecue techniques with global inspiration, offering an experience that Michelin described as ingredient driven and hospitality focused. 

Following the announcement, Salt Smokehouse chef and owner Rene Boyzo shared a message congratulating Purveyor and its culinary team on the recognition.  

“We extend our sincere congratulations on receiving the Michelin Guide recommendations and the incredible Chef Tino,” the statement read. “Sharing the recognition of the Michelin Guide recommendations with you is truly special. To Chef Tino and all the staff who have shaped Purveyor into the phenomenal restaurant it is today, we are so genuinely happy for your well deserved success.”  

City officials also highlighted the broader economic impact. At the Nov. 6 Huntsville City Council meeting, Mayor Tommy Battle presented proclamations declaring Purveyor Day and Salt Smokehouse Day, citing the recognition as evidence of Huntsville’s emergence as a culinary destination.  

“This honor places the establishments among the most distinguished restaurants in the nation, spotlighting Huntsville as a rising destination for food lovers across the South,” the city said in a statement.  

Local residents have embraced the recognition as well. Huntsville resident AJ Pollard said the spotlight on locally owned restaurants stands apart from the usual excitement surrounding new chain openings.  

“It might not be a star, but it’s still high praise for any restaurant,” Pollard said.  

Statewide, the Michelin Guide’s Recommended list includes Auburn’s 1856 Restaurant and several Birmingham restaurants, including Automatic Seafood and Oysters, Bottega, Chez Fonfon, Current Charcoal Grill, Helen, Hot and Hot Fish Club and Rêve.  

For Huntsville shoppers still crossing names off their holiday lists, the recognition offers a simple solution.
